Functional Art Between Sculpture and Use

Functional art occupies a space in which use does not limit artistic expression. A table may remain fully functional while operating as a sculptural presence. A vessel can hold an arrangement while also existing as an autonomous object. Lighting can define both the atmosphere of an interior and the physical character of the space around it.

The works selected by TWÓR approach function as part of an artistic idea rather than as its opposite. Their value lies not only in what they do, but also in how they engage with material, touch, light, scale and the surrounding architecture.

Materials and Independent Artistic Practices

Artists represented within the collection work across ceramics, stoneware, glass, wood, jesmonite, metal, parchment and other materials. Traditional craft processes coexist with experimental methods, while traces of hand-making, material irregularity and individual decisions remain an important part of many of the works.

The collection focuses on objects made as unique works, individual variations or limited editions. Many pieces are produced directly within artists’ studios and retain the subtle differences that arise from manual processes and the behaviour of the material itself.

This approach places the work closer to collecting art than to conventional mass-produced design. The object carries the authorship, process and individual language of a specific artist.
